Mental Illness

My son is 16 now, but was diagnosed at 4 years old with ADHD. Which has now been changed to Bi-polar disorder. He is currently living in a home in Santa Rosa, with other kids with similar problems. He is taking Lamictal, Neurontin, and Melotonin. I have been doing research on other ways to help him. He will need to take his medication also, as I really don't want to stop that but maybe in the future when he becomes an adult I can help him by becoming more informed of both Mental Illness and herbal remedies. I watched a program on cable TV on Ayurved Science and was very impressed with it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. FYI - He has attempted suicide in the past and gets very very depressed at cycles.

Hello,
I am practicing Ayurveda and Panchkarma Treatments since 20 years now. I
strongly believe that ayurveda will help to yr son in ADHD and Bi-Polar
disorder.
Pl. plan to visit us in India for his ayurveda treatment.
Best wishes,

Dear Dr Shah

Can you say a bit more about the Ayurvedic approach to Bipolar
disorder and how the treatment would go? I'm not asking for trade
secrets just generalities?

Chris Morgan

Dear Mr. Morgan,
Regarding ADHD and Bipolar disorder, after personal counseling and prakriti
determination, I would suggest for several panchkarma treatments like
Abhyang, Svedana, Basti, Nasya, Shirodhara with specific medicines -
medicated oils (according to condition and dosha)
Thanks for yr comments.

Hello to every one

I had upload the one article as below at
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Ayurved/files/
Ayurveda: a historical perspective and principles of the traditional healthcare
system in India.
Altern Ther Health Med. 2001 Mar;7(2):36-42.

[I wasn't so impressed by the above article - the historical research seems to reinforce some of the myths about Ayurveda, with its mention of organ transplant and talk of IMO improbbably ancient origins. Moderator]

I think this article will help to Sherri to understand the some beckground of
the ayurved and the term use in the ayurved.

I have also collected the some other article perticular for mental disease. I
will upload it in file section and email you again.

tonsils and adenoids

My 5 year old is diagnosed with enlarged tonsils and adenoids. Surgery for removal of these glands is recommended - but I wish to try alternate medicine, food habits change, plus lifestyle changes to improve his condition and possibly avoid surgery.

Dear Friend,
Here I am prescribing you a home remedy, which I am using personally. Also
number of my young patients have benefited by this remedy.
1) Take 100 grams of Turmeric (Curcuma) powder, add 50 grams of grinded
sugar. Mix well and keep it in a glass bottle.
Take this powder 5 grams two to three times a day. chew it and do not take
any water / food after it for 1 hour. Take 1 t.s.f powder at bed time and
let it be applied on the throat inside for whole night, without taking any
water, milk or food after wards..
2) For gargling - take 50 grams Turmeric powder + 25 grams rock-salt
(sindhav). Mix well and keep it in a bottle.
Take 1 - 2 t.s.f powder in glass of luke warm water, Gargle with this
water - twice a day.
3) Tab. Septilin or Sy. Septilin - 2 tab./ tsf 3 times a day.

With best regards,

Advert: Medicine of the gods

Medicine of the Gods:
Basic principles of Ayurvedic Medicine
by Chris Morgan
(If you would like to read a short essay explaining some of the principles of Ayurveda, click here)
ISBN 1869928377, 120pp. £9.99/$14.99
Order this book

Ayurveda is an Asian medical system which has its beginnings in the sixth century BCE and thrives even to the present-day. There was once a celebrated doctor called Caraka who lived in the second century of our era. He was one of the greatest physicians that has ever lived. He recorded the fact that the gods themselves were perplexed by the continued existence of disease, which was a hindrance to humanity's progress to enlightenment. These same gods, he says, therefore prepared the way for Ayurveda, which literally means the 'science of longevity' to be taught to the human race. Thus the title of this book is Medicine of the Gods.

Medicine of the Gods is the first of a series that aims to introduce the physical and metaphysical concepts of Ayurveda to a non-specialist audience. Medical ideas underpin a great deal of Eastern thought especially Tantrism, alchemy, yoga and the science of love. The book is not intended as a series of health tips or as a textbook for the clinical practice of medicine, which in the Ayurveda tradition requires at least seven years intensive training. The book is aimed at students and lovers of South Asian culture, perhaps also anthropologists and others with a need for a straightforward introduction to the core principles of another scientific tradition.

Praise for first edition:
'The author's main purpose, introducing ancient Indian medical theory in a relatively trustworthy manner to the interested general reader in easy language, while at the same time being intellectually challenging, is served well by this book.' Rahul Peter Das in Traditional South Asian Medicine Vol 6 2001

This book contains virtually everything you could want to know about the Hindu system of Ayurvedic medicine, which began on or about the sixth century BCE and is still thriving today. The history, correspondences or "humours', and other intriguing aspects of this intricate system are described in easy-to-understand language for those unfamiliar with Ayurveda. There is also a catalogue of ailments and how Ayurveda views each of them, and illness in general. I found this fascinating reading, both as a western herbal practitioner, and as a reader fascinated by how other cultures view the world and what goes wrong within it. Highly recommended!
